Training Event #1
Topic: Supportive Adult-Youth Relationships
Potential Participant Outcomes:
- To learn a variety of strategies and methods to support the needs and interests of individual youth
- To review findings from resiliency research which emphasize the importance of the adult-child relationship
- To practice skills related to building supportive relationships with youth such as listening and responding respectively and warmly to youth
- To learn about other program practices that can help promote positive staff-youth relationships such as stable staffing, small group sizes, etc.
Training Event #2
Topic: Providing Positive Youth Guidance
Potential Participant Outcomes:
- To understand and address the root causes of negative behavior
- To learn a variety of techniques for setting clear limits, rules, rituals and routines
- To analyze the link between high program organization (consistent yet flexible scheduling; smooth transitions; adequate materials, space and staff) and positive behavior
- To promote opportunities for youth leadership and choice as a strategy to prevent behavior problems.
Training Event #3
Topic: Supporting Positive Peer-Peer Relationships
Potential Participant Outcomes:
- To better understand the phases, stages, and importance of friendships
- To learn ways to help promote a positive and safe socio-emotional climate
- To learn ways to help prevent social isolation, bullying, and exclusion
- To learn methods for teaching conflict resolution skills to youth
- To learn about activities and other strategies that can encourage cooperation, trust, and team building among youth
Training Event #4
Topic: Encouraging Initiative
Potential Participant Outcomes:
- To examine how your program offers youth opportunities for choice, autonomy, responsibility, and leadership as strategies for encouraging initiative
- To learn how certain program strategies such as youth councils, apprenticeships, service learning, flexible scheduling, 1:1 time with youth, and long range activities and projects can contribute to initiative.
