In the 2005-2006 school year there will be a four-part, main event training series for all of the Out-of-School Time programs in the city of Cambridge. The series is entitled the "Human Side of Quality". Participating sites need to assemble organizational teams of at least three individuals including the organizational leader, site coordinator/director and front line staff. We expect to host approximately 40 sites with teams of three people per site. If you have historically participated in Leading for Quality we welcome your on-going participation. If you are a Cambridge out-of-school time program who has not participated in the past and wishes to join us please contact Susan Richards at 617-349-4099 or srichards@cambridgema.gov. The trainers will work as a team to design the training content although each site will be assigned one of the four trainers for the series. The training groups will each include ten sites and not more than 30 people. The training team, lead by Ellen Gannett of the National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST), also includes Mo Barbosa, Gil Noam and Nashma. The topics for the four-part training series this year include:
- Supportive Adult Child Relationships
- Providing Positive Youth Guidance
- Supporting Positive Peer to Peer Relationships
- Encouraging Youth Initiative
We will also offer additional training events to a smaller number of sites, a three-part "Facilitation and Leadership" training open to ten sites with teams of 2 people per site, lead by Ora Grodsky and "Cultural Competency/Engaging Families" open to ten sites with teams of 3 people per site, lead by Julienne Johnson.
Beginning this year, we will introduce a Training Apprenticeship Model where each of the senior trainers will have apprentices working with them over the course of the training series. A nomination and selection process will be utilized to select the apprentice trainers. Organizations' supporting staff acting as Apprentice Trainers will receive a $1,000 gift.
History:
In the 2001-2002 School Year the first Annual "Leading for Quality" Trainings, "A Leadership and Management Seminar" took place over two full days with 45 Out of School Time programs from across the city.
In the 2002-2003 School Year the second Annual citywide "Leading for Quality" Training took place focusing on National School Age Care Alliance (NSACA) standards' "Human Relationships" keys. NSACA is the organization through which out-of-school time programs can become accredited.
In the 2003-2004 School Year two-day trainings were held with all the Leading for Quality participants (with approximately 60 individuals attending each event), again in key "Human Relationships" standards. Topics included:
- Staff to child
- Staff to staff
- Staff to family (with a special focus on supporting teams of staff in their efforts to 'take back' the training content and implement changes at sites)
In 2004-2005, completing our fourth Annual Leading for Quality Training Series untitled "Engaging Youth and Stimulating Their Thinking and Learning", 135 out-of-school time staff in site based teams (organizational leaders, program directors and frontline teachers) representing 41 programs from across the city participated in the training. The topics for training included;
- Multiple intelligences and learning styles
- Links to learning
- Project based learning and critical thinking
- Inquiry based communication.
